When should I feel fetal movement?

Most women feel the beginnings of fetal movement before 21 weeks gestation. In a first pregnancy, this can occur around 18-21 weeks gestation, and in following pregnancies it can occur as early as 15-16 weeks gestation. Early fetal movement is felt most commonly when the woman is sitting or lying quietly and concentrating on her body. It is usually described as a tickle or feathery feeling below the umbilical area. As the fetus grows in size, these feelings become stronger, regular, and easier to feel. Studies found that the fetus is most active between 9pm and 1am during the day/evening.   The medical term for the point at which a woman feels the baby move is “quickening”. Woman may notice that they feel more fetal movement right after meals or snacks.  Fetal movement should be noticed throughout the day and night.  As the baby grows and gets larger the perception of movement will change and might be less noticeable.  Following your baby’s “kick counts” are a way for you to ensure that your baby moves 10 movements in an hour, at least twice a day.  If you notice that there is less movement during the day you should drink a large glass of juice and lay on your left side to see if your baby will be more likely to move with a sugar boost and hydration.   If you have concerns about fetal movement becoming less noticeable you should contact your health care provider/obstetrician.  This is extremely important since fetal movement can directly correlate to the baby’s well-being.

The reconstruction of the baby room is complete, so I can return my focus on items for the baby. Dave the Dragon is modeling the UPPAbaby Cruz here. We tried out different strollers and settled on this one because it’s lightweight and folds up easily to fit in the trunk of my car. Below the handle bar we attached the parent organizer where there’s pockets for a bottle and other stuff. For comfort behind the baby we put in a snuzzler, which will also help him be more snug in the seat too.

I relapsed from the cold that I had a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately it has gone down to my chest and my blood pressure is pretty low, I am keeping an eye on that now. It’s been non-stop for both Ian and I, I think my body just said ENOUGH! The good thing is we are almost there. The baby room is almost complete, I have most of my items, the only ones we are missing I won’t need until 6 months from now so I don’t feel the stress of that. Now it’s all about homemade chicken soup and rest for me!

I’m getting lots of stuff, so where do I put it all? Good thing my parents got this 9-cube organizer where I can put fabric drawers in them for clothes, or leave them empty for essential items… like toys! The best one is the monkey drawer in the middle, and Dave sits on top of the pyramid, as dragons always do!

Can’t wait to put this on. Crawl The Line Johnny Cash Onesie. Great music meets great clothes!

Finally finished the floors, painting and baseboards in the baby room. Managed to snap a few photos of the empty room before it quickly filled up with the massive amount of baby stuff that’s been accumulating.

Yesterday was a day of unpacking, washing, organizing and decorating. I can’t even begin to tell you what a relief that is! I still have a laundry list of things to do but I am marking them off day by day.

I have started to get hot at night now.. kid of strange because I am always cold. Not sure if that is typical but I guessing it is. Last night was the first night I started to feel uncomfortable. I feel the heavy load on my belly and my small frame. Fortunately, my legs are not swollen and I don’t have back pain that I hear most women have at this stage. I have started to feel a little tired but overall my energy is pretty good.

Today is going to be a day of reading and watching the ladies walk down the red carpet! So happy I am not reporting on that! :)

This is another item I should have already had. Having a baby suddenly makes one more responsible when it comes to precaution and safety. In addition to a smoke alarm, a fire extinguisher is something everyone should have.

I could have used this a few years back when I had a small fire break out in the kitchen. I had put a cardboard box on the stove and didn’t notice the burner was on. Fortunately I was able to grab a flap on the box not engulfed in flames, rush it outside and hose it down, but having a fire extinguisher would have definitely helped save some of the hair on my arm.

After dozens of runs to the hardware store and countless times in and out of the garage to do cutting, trimming and drilling, the job is almost complete. Finishing touches are what pull everything together.

For the baseboards I used solid oak. It’s about 3/4″ at the bottom of the boards, which helps completely cover the small gap between the hardwood floor and the drywall. Any gaps should be filled to keep insect and other unwanted things from getting in there. I used clear silicone sealant. For the baseboards I used provincial wood stain and a clear poleurethane satin finish to match the color of the hardwood floors.

Mom and Dad’s friend Diana got me this rad gift. It’s a sleep sheep, and hangs out with me in my crib and sings songs! Like having my own personal musician to help me with my nocturnal activities, but this one is fuzzy!

I have spent a couple of hours online researching humidifiers. I thought it was going to be an easy find but I had no idea how many different ones that you can choose from. There is the evaporative humidifier, the cool mist humidifier, the warm mist humidifier and the ultrasonic humidifier. Then you have to know the room size and if you want to use filters or not, and then there is the noise level and the maintenance. Yikes! I felt like you could write a book with all the different information and reviews out there! I am still not sure which one but I have narrowed it to two. The Adorable Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Penquin Humidifier, or the Crane COOL Mist Teardrop Humidifier. The price is right and I don’t need a filter. Overall the ratings are really good so I feel I can’t go wrong with either one of them… I will report later when I make my final decision…

When my parents were here our beautiful cat disappeared. Izzy is an indoor/outdoor cat and was a stray. About a year and half ago she should up in Ian’s backyard with two little kittens.  Ian feed her and the little kittens and they continued to come back for food. One day just Izzy showed up without the kittens and we haven’t seen them since. Izzy continued to come and would stay longer each day. Ian made a cat door for her in the garage and trained her to come in and out of it. We took her to the veterinarian to get her shots and to get her fixed. Cut to: fatter and healthier we claimed her as our cat so when she didn’t show up Saturday night to be feed we thought it was odd but didn’t worry, we figured she was out ‘catting” around and would be hungry in the morning… Sunday morning no Izzy… then Tuesday, Wednesday so I started thinking the worse possibility. There are a lot of coyotes and bobcats in our area so the thought of that was devastating. Ian left and soon after I heard a little cry in the garage… Yep! It was Izzy!! Starving!!!  It looked like she had been brushed so it’s a mystery…. just happy to have her back! :)

Daniel just returned from New York’s fashion week and has posted several new looks and ideas for you ladies on Stylin Lady. We are adding more everyday. So excited to have him!

We have also added a wonderful nutritionist, Susan Dopart. She will start posting later in the week. If you have any questions for her or anyone of our bloggers please leave it in the comment box.

As for me, I am feeling great, just organizing, shopping and reading. Once the baby room is finished I will feel less pressure. Thinking about the wonderful visit I had with my parents. It was the first time that Ian and my parents met each other and I think it was a great success!

This is the most laborious part of the process, installing the wood flooring. It’s the one part that’s would be very difficult for one person to do because it requires measuring and cutting the wood, pouring adhesive, using a trowel to spread the adhesive, then putting the pieces together. Fortunately I have friends! My buddy Richard did the placement of the wood while I did the cutting and pouring. Masking tape is to keep the pieces from separating as they dry.

An unintended side benefit of doing this kind of work is it really works your quads and glutes. Pretty sore this morning.

New York Fashion Week is over. I am exhausted, inspired, and excited to share all of my findings with you! Although the looks I am posting this week won’t be available to you until the Fall, let’s take these opportunities to get inspired without being overwhelmed! Here is a fun photo of the head of the runway in one of the main tents. I want you to feel confident enough to stand in front of this sea of photographers! Feeling positive about yourself is a huge part of leading a healthy lifestyle, which is key for the health of your child. p.s. 99 percent of the photos you see here on “Stylin Lady” will be taken with my iPhone. Love- Daniel Musto

What is the recommended weight gain in pregnancy?
How much weight you should gain in pregnancy can depend on a number of important variables.  Are you pregnant with one (singleton) or two (twins) or three (triplets) babies?  What is your age and what is your pre-pregnancy weight?  Do you have any additional medical conditions such as gestational diabetes or hypertension that will affect the overall recommended weight gain.
It’s clear that gaining the right amount of weight during pregnancy involves eating a healthy and balanced diet so that your baby is getting all the nutrients he or she needs and is growing at a healthy rate. In general you will need to consume 100 to 300 more calories a day to meet the needs of your growing baby.  You should gain about 2 to 4 pounds during your first three months of pregnancy and 1 pound a week for the remainder of your pregnancy.

Guidelines for weight gain during a singleton pregnancy are as follows:
Underweight women (BMI < 18.5) should gain 28-40 pounds.
Normal-weight women (BMI, 18.5-24.9) should gain 25-35 pounds.
Overweight women (BMI, 25-29.9) should gain 15-25 pounds.
Obese women (BMI, 30 or higher) should gain 11-20 pounds.
It is important to ask your health care provider how much weight you should gain during pregnancy. A woman of average weight before pregnancy should gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. Underweight women should gain 28-40 pounds during pregnancy. Overweight women may need to gain only 15-25 pounds during pregnancy.

Where Does the Extra Weight Go During Pregnancy?

Baby                                   8 pounds
Placenta                            2-3 pounds
Amniotic fluid                 2-3 pounds
Breast tissue                    2-3 pounds
Blood supply                    4 pounds
Fat stores for delivery and breastfeeding      5-9 pounds

Uterus increase               2-5 pounds

Total                               25 to 35 pounds

I find that some women in my practice have a difficult time pacing themselves as the pregnancy goes along on how much weight to gain and at what intervals.  It’s a challenging time to see your body completely morph over a 9 month time period.  I always remind women that this is a temporary time period when you need to allow your body to grow and develop in a healthy way.  Once you are done with pregnancy and nursing you can have the body you once had before this wonderful journey began!

My Dad and Stepmom, Sandi, came for a visit to see my baby bump over the weekend, although it was a short visit it  was great to have them here. Sandi and I went baby shopping and she suggested a couple of items that I should get that were not on my register. She said that I should use a toothbrush right away to get the baby use to brushing his teeth when he has teeth! We found this Green Sprouts Silicone Baby Toothbrush.

Also, Sandi bought our little one the Lamaze Garden Bug Wrist Rattle/Foot Finder Set.
She said it helps with hand, eye coordination plus they are really cute!

Negarin did a standing presentation this Fashion Week in the main tents. This wool coat is one of the incredible morphing garments women like you will love during and after pregnancy. The thick waist tie keeps you cinched on your smaller days and expands to fit you on your not-so-smaller days. The mandarin collar will also offer a slimming details. Love- Daniel Musto

I elected to go with a two-step process of applying the floor sealant first, and then the adhesive for the hardwood floor separately. On a previous project I had tried using a 2-in-1, where the wood adhesive and moisture barrier were combined into one solution. I thought using the 2-in-1 would save time, and it did initially, but it had some unforeseen consequences. The 2-in-1 was difficult and messy to use and an absolute nightmare to clean up. When something is both moisture proof and an adhesive, it repels water and virtually every other attempt to remove it, so when it gets on your hands, clothes and other other unintended places, it refuses to come off. Plus any of the 2-in-1 solution that got on the top of the wood (which is impossible to avoid) left a filmy residue that took a couple days to remove, more than negating the time it takes to apply the moisture barrier separately. So personally I prefer the two-step method where the sealant and adhesive are applied at different times.

I used Redgard as the moisture barrier and sealant, which goes on easily with a paint roller. This stuff gives the room a scary blood red look, but only for a short while until the hardwood is put in.

We all know and love Rachel Roy from her appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, in addition to her amazing shoe collection at Macy’s. This silk, color block top, is the perfect way of wearing stripes without looking juvenile. Clearly, we will be wearing it untucked to make room for baby, but can still pair it with amazing black stretch pants from a line like Spanx. Also, it opens in the front so it’s an easy access for breastfeeding. Love- Daniel Musto

Imitation and Doyle Mueser had a presentation of the Fall/Winter 2012 collection at Buddakan in the meatpacking district. Not only were there old-Hollywood inspired cocktails and hair-dos, magicians with doves, and crystal chandeliers that would make the Queen of England envious, but there was this impressive twist on the men’s dress shirt. Every gal knows how cozy it is to be in your man-friend’s crisp white button down around the house. Now you can proudly keep one in your closet. This piece reveals one arm and offers up just enough skin. Wear it untucked to accommodate your new pear-shaped figure. Love- Daniel Musto

These classics are from mom and dad’s friends Jeff and Serafina. Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?, Sleep Book, Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!, Fox in Socks, and ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book! This Dr. Seuss guy really seems to know what he’s talking about.

Mom and Dad’s favorite is the Sleep Book. I can’t imagine why…?

Diesel‘s Black and Gold label isn’t the first stop I would make with my maternity body in mind, but this cropped grey jacket could be a great addition to a cozy long tshirt and stretch pants. You can achieve that Kate Moss street-look with just this jacket and a pair of edgy boots. Love- Daniel Musto

For a city girl with an inner-Lady Gaga, this capelet is a great way of staying warm this winter. Jad Ghandour intricate leather work on the shoulders and neck give you the slim silhouette on top that you need to wear something with so much fabric around the middle. Pair with stretchy black jeans and wedge booties to turn heads. Love- Daniel Musto

In an earlier post I showed this Fall/Winter 2012 Rachel Roy look sandwiched in between another 2 looks, and stated that it couldn’t work on the pregnant body. Well,  I would look to retract that statement. This belted empire waistline top is constructed of suiting (a fabric similar to that of a men’s suit) and soft leather. As long as the belt sits above your belly, this frock is a great option for date night… you better still be having them!! You can’t stay in and watch “I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant” EVERY night!! Love- Daniel Musto

Ian and I woke up at 7:00 am to the sound of crew guys setting up for a film that was being shot in our backyard. Usual first day shot…. racing to get that first day shoot in. The other thing that you are always chasing when filming outside, is the sun. The extras didn’t show so they had to use the crew to fill the seats before they lost their perfect sun. Ian served as a warm body in the background!

The shoot finished early afternoon and the housekeeper was suppose to arrive… waiting waiting.. no show.. House was a mess and my parents were coming in from Georgia this evening. It was a big scramble to get someone in here last minute on a Saturday.  I tried not to panic… Thankfully, Ian’s friend, Serafina, called her girl and she came hours later. Saved…. Just in the nick of time!

Warning! This post is for inspiration purposes only! Although I don’t want you to run to the store to nab these Rachel Roy runway looks right now, they can inspire us. These 3 looks reminded me to inform you that, although your front side might be larger than life right now, your backside could still be flirty and fun. If your chest is too busty and your belly is bulging, show a little skin around back. While shopping, always be sure to investigate the back side of tops and dresses. Love- Daniel Musto

This floor length gown by Jad Ghandour looks great on this svelte model but can also look great on your baby-bearing bod, too! An empire waistline provides a form fitting band just under the chest, while often supplying room for growth around the stomach and hips. Looks like SOMEBODY just found something to wear to that October wedding they were invited to! Love- Daniel Musto

Jad Ghandour showed some interesting leather work in his Fall/Winter 2012 show at Cipriani. This basic black leather jacket is pleated toward the center to give it its avante garde shape. This piece will cover just enough of your newly large chest while giving your baby bump some room to breathe. Love- Daniel Musto

I discovered the original source of the black mold. Years back there was a sprinkler problem and water was pooling under the window outside the room. Mold needs moisture to grow, so that would have been the right environment for it. The sprinkler was fixed, but it probably took a while for all the moisture to go away. There were still traces of mold on the dry wall when I removed the floor boards, so to be safe I removed the whole section of dry wall under the window and let it air out.

Here’s the progression of the dry wall removal, replacement and repainting. Before priming I used Kilz Latex Primer, a mold and mildew resistant sealer.

Yesterday, I saw Dr.Ross to go over Dr. Platt’s ultrasound results and to do my 2 week baby check. She said she was really happy with the results, the baby has a strong heart and was growing perfectly, also, my amniotic fluid was looking good. Ross said that the baby was frank breech (the head is located at the top of my uterus and his little tuss is  toward the birth canal). He still has time to move face down so we shall see in the coming weeks.

Frank Breech position

She also, wants me to start taking my blood pressure twice a day! ARG… Apparently, there is a 25% chance of me developing high blood pressure because of my age. She also said that she is going to start doing a non stress test (NST) every 2 weeks when I am at 34 weeks, then I have to go to see her every week.  The primary goal of the NST  is to measure the heart rate of the fetus in response to its own movements. Healthy babies will respond with an increased heart rate during times of movement, and the heart rate will decrease at rest. The concept behind a non-stress test is that adequate oxygen is required for fetal activity and heart rate to be within normal ranges. Dr. Ross is being extra cautious which makes me feel well taken care of! :)

I was asked the other day whether I feel that I am “above” anything. My initial thought was “No” until I put further thought into it. Yes, actually, I AM above something. I, Daniel Musto, celebrity stylist, am above maternity wear… and Nebraska, literally. (That’s what the map in my Virgin America seat tells me as I am writing this on my flight to California from New York Fashion Week.) Now, ladies, this doesn’t mean you need to dig through your junk drawer for your Pea in the Pod receipt so you can return the purchase you made in a panic when you found out you are with child! My presence in this space will be to supply style options off the mainstream racks of your favorite stores, pages of your favorite online boutiques, and runways of the world. Randall Scerbo, founder of Lady + Baby, and I believe that you are able to buy new items off the exact same racks as your not-so-pregnant friends while incorporating items you loved before the pregnancy test came up positive. We will be welcoming some amazing guest writers along our journey together. Be ready to hear from designers, stylists, expectant fashionistas, and celebrities. Here goes nothin’! Remember that you can write to me about anything and everything you may have on your mind. For more about me, please feel free to click the photo below to view my website.

There is no way of avoiding the appeal for this grey leopard look by Corey Lynn Calter. A pattern, especially leopard print, can often widen the figure that it is covering. Fortunately, the beauty of this fabrication is that charcoal and black color of this animal print is dark enough to provide a slimmer look. Although it is difficult to tell in the photo, the dress is A-line with a loose turtle neck. The short-sleeved coat is full enough around the middle to be worn open or closed. Again we see the usage of stripes on an accessory to incorporate the color-blocking trend. Love- Daniel Musto

Corey Lynn Calter isn’t known for sequins, but I love how she incorporates them for Fall/Winter 2012 while bringing the casual elements of a tunic length, short-sleeved, coat. As we discover sequin pieces on our journey together that work with your new belly, always remember that a second layer could tone it down if you are feeling too flashy. Love- Daniel Musto

Falguni and Shane Peacock are best known for their intricate dresses, worn by pop stars like Britney Spears and Katy Perry, but can also throw down in the casual separates department. This loose fitting suede vest is a girl’s best friend. Straight off their Fall/Winter runway, this piece can be worn layered over tshirts or jersey dresses. (Jersey is a fabric which is found in most t-shirts.) Love- Daniel Musto
