Now that Miles is 29 inches tall and officially a toddler, we needed to upgrade him to a new car seat. Before we installed it, we wanted to test it out first, so this is the first time in the seat. He looks a little dubious, but I think he’ll like it better than the old one that was getting cramped. The cup holder is a nice touch.

In a shelf full of books Miles singled out the only one on the shelf by Thich Nhat Hanh!

Perhaps he is channeling his Vietnamese heritage?

Miles had his birthday party on Saturday. Lots of friends and kids came to celebrate.

We went to the 1st birthday party for our friends little boy, Enzo. Despite being in a room full of people, Miles always manages to be in the middle of things.

…..how to crawl, or is it the other way around?

Miles doesn’t have much patience for having his diaper changed. He’s a baby on the move.

When I was in college I was a short order breakfast cook. I did everything from waffles to eggs benedict. I tested my pancake recipe on Miles, and he seems to approve. Gobbled up three mini pancakes with no complaints.

When mom is busy in the kitchen, Miles can feel like part of the action while in the bouncer. He shows off some musical skills also.

Every morning I wake up this is my view. A munchkin with a big grin staring at me. Then he proceeds to pound on my chest and climb on me.

So where is Miles??

So he can…

Miles thinks big purple stuffed toys are funny.

Miles was really wiped out after a vigorous play session and grandma and grandpas place.

Miles got acquainted with Stella, our friend Bader’s dog. Stella got very friendly with Miles.

Stella gives Miles a doggie smooch.

Miles took his first ‘solo’ venture outdoors.

Mental preparation.

On the move.

Wipeout!

Back on track.

I got this outdoor thing conquered!

Miles is managing to get more of the food he picks up into his mouth now. Keeping it in the mouth though… still a work in progress.

Miles is on the move. He’s now a fully operational munchkin.

Miles is usually a rambunctious child, wanting to explore and see new things. Since he’s been sick he just wants comfort though, preferring to be held close and crying when you put him down. The Ergo Carrier has been, because it allows us to keep him close while freeing our hands so we can do other things. Having a sick child is not a pleasant experience, but I’m thankful for all the things we have to make it more bearable.

Miles is now getting up on his knees, presumably the next step toward crawling. He’s still hasn’t quite figured out what to do after that though. Maybe having the pressure of a camera on him is a bit distracting!

Miles is sitting up now, and trying to crawl. Both are still a work in progress.

According to this article, babies born in March or April are more likely to become CEOs than babies born in any other month.

Here, Miles practices his money and finance skills by tasting a piggy bank.

He seems to like the packaging as much as the gift itself.

My old buddies I grew up with came in town for a visit and got to hang out with the munchkin. Several of them have kids themselves, so it was their chance to relive the glory days of carrying baby.

Miles has never seen a beard as thick as Chad’s before

Not surprising Travis looks at ease holding a little boy, given he has two himself

Some kids dream of being a pro sports athlete, like a football player. In Miles case, he seems to be trying to be the football itself.

Miles tried oatmeal for the first time. As expected, more of it went everywhere but in his mouth. He seemed to enjoy it though.

Miles liked plumb and avocado. Banana? Not as much.

Miles has become aware of a black fuzzy non-human that shares the house he lives in. I’m not sure exactly what he makes of her (Izzy), but he’s reached out and tried to grab her a few times. This time he got a hold of her whiskers. Izzy seems to take it all in stride.

He’s so tired he can’t keep his eyes open. Somehow he managed to finish the whole bottle though.

Miles is getting close to crawling, so more work needs to be done baby proofing the place. There’s a mess of wires generated by my computer, something inevitable with electronics. This could be hazardous in many respects, especially being on the floor.

In the before picture you see what it used to look like. In the after picture I fixed a board painted the same color as the wall where the cords can drop behind and be out of site. Plus I put a small shelf under the desk where some of the electronics can rest where they’re off the ground.

For the past month Miles has taken strong interest whenever we eat. Tries to grab our plates or cups if they are near him. This is his first time taking a sample of what big people (non-breast milk) food tastes like, a slice of plum. Yum!

When Miles sees the bottle he locks in. He tries to ‘help’ by grabbing it and shoving it in his mouth, but his aim is sometimes off. He also tries to hold the bottle, but he usually ends up knocking it out of his mouth or getting his fingers in the way of the nipple instead. A work in progress!

But he can’t quite get all the arms and legs to do what they’re supposed to do.
